anyone considered using DirectFB and GTK for that ? If the desktop is 
about gnome integration and supposed to be more osx-like, then we might 
want to at least investigate the possibility of replacing X with something 
else.

If X is a given (maybe it is because of the WM issues), then maybe X on 
DirectFB may be a worthwhile option as well.
