Layout Keyboard

Hi all,

I am new in the list, my first post, would like well to understand as the integration functions, gnome/console/linux of layout of the keyboard.  Well, and that when I installed xorg in top of xfree86 my graphical environments had lost the list of layouts were curious to know as this functions.
