gnome version? gnome2? non-GUI choose a wm?

I have two quick questions but the help I hope to get on these topics will
make me feel wonderful and get me past a major HUGE ROAD BLOCK!!

[1] How do I determine what version of gnome I am running? My ~/.xinitrc
has "exec gnome-session" in it so can I do a flag to gnome-session such as
-v? Should I be worried that I have a .gnome AND a .gnome2 directory in my
home directory?

[2] Is there a non-GUI way (i.e. before running startx) to select what
windows manager I want to use? I changed it in the GUI manner from
MetaCity to QVWM then tried to change back but now when I startx I get one
desktop wallpaper, then it changes to a different image, then just a cursor
to move around the screen and I must Ctrl-Alt-BS to crash XFree86. On my
FreeBSD list someone said to edit or create the file ~/.gnome/default.wm
and I tried putting a WM=/usr/X11R6/bin/metacity line in there but that
didn't help. Someone please rescue me from text-only land? :) Thanks!
