A work-around would be to set the panels to autohide when you want to use full-screen apps.
Yes, I thought about that. The problem is that autohide isn't available for menu panels, as far as I can tell.

Question: Why not?


Or run a different window manager (such as Enlightenment) when you want to be able to go over the top of the panels. If you do this, I'd suggest running it totally outside of gnome-session.

All in all the Gnome2 apps coexist with Enlightenment 16.5 just fine.
