gnome-init fails

I'm trying to run an application that fails with the message:

   GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
   Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication
protocols
      specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

Stepping through the application with gdb shows that this error message
comes from the routine gnome_init_with_popt_tale.  I've occasionally
seen this message from other progrms too.  What causes this error and
how can I fix it.  Thanks.
