I recently installed Debian and experienced something like this. For
me, the problem suddenly went away when I turned off the sound server
in the control center. I didn't investigate it further (I'm not that
fond of the desktop sounds, anyway, and I always forget to turn on the
speakers :-), but it seemed to be a problem with ESD?
