About the problem with gnome 1.0 not running, I just had to put my
hostname koala in addition to localhost and localhost.localdomain
inside /etc/hosts.

Thanks for your input (direct and indirect :-) on my problem.  It
works now, and gnome is beautiful (naturally, it looks better on your
own screen than screenshots off the web).  I will explore the desktop
more, ...

and thanks to the entire gnome development team for a job beautifully done.
