no transparent zvt

For some time now I have not been able to get zvt to be transparent.  I
thought it was just a small problem, but now that the code is slowly
starting to stabilize, and I still can't get it I thought I would ask what
is up?  Is there anything special I need to be doing in gnome-terminal to
get it to use a transparent background?  Thanks in advance for the help.
