Getting the gnome going

I can't get gnome going, till I get gnome-libs going. Can't get gnome-libs
going till I get orbit going. Orbit (0.4) won't compile, infact it won't
even make a makefile, instead it tells me that sed can't read
./po/makefile.in.in and creates a dir po in the popt subdir.
Any ideas whats hapening?
