0.99.8 & gtcd

i've not installed .99.8 yet, since i'm a RPM weenie. but the
announcement has me just slightly worried:

>* GNOME Media

>- GTCD now cuts long names (Tim)

just how little does it cut them down to? some of us weenies would like
to use track names like "Contrapunctus XIII (inversus): Allegro
spirituoso" namely. i'd hate to lose the ones i've already typed in.

granted there is the problem of how to display such long titles, and
arguably you'd need a new (special purpose?) widget to do it - wrap
words and indent continuation lines would be my suggestion. highlight
the entire block on selection. use a scrollbar if the box gets too long
vertically - that's one thing microsoft did right, one of few. most
likely i'll never see any of this, though, since i'm not good enough to
write it myself. whatever.

ah well, if i'm at it kvetching about cd players, i might as well speak
my mind about the cddb format. it's too simplistic. one single field for
disc title and artist isn't nearly enough; separate fields for composer,
performer and title might not suffice all the time. sometimes you'd want
optional fields for track composer or even performer. and if i've got it
right, the current cddb format makes some comments "magical" so that
they're really data fields, does it not? messy. somebody needs to start
thinking of a v2.0 maybe.

 - rand, complaining because he's in a bad mood generally. sorry.
