gnome-session questions

I'm trying to figure out the gnome-session and session manager properties
bit.  I added the things I wanted to start through the Session Manager
Properties, and restarted using gnome-session as the only thing in the
.xsession . When I login, it still just starts up from the
/opt/gnome/share/default-session.  I looked in the ~/.gnome/session, and
looks good, but still not starting the stuff I specified.  So, I copied
the default-session to ~/.gnome/session, edited it, changed what I wanted
to start, re-login.  Now it starts the stuff I want, but if I look in the
Session Manager Properties, its blank.  Any clues, or is this something
that still has to be finished before its ready for heavy use..?
