No title bar, cant move windows

Hi,
For some reason, when I launch Gnome, all my applications make windows
in the upper left hand corner of my screen. There is no title bar on
the windows, so I can't move them or resize them  or X them.

I must have set something up wrong.
my .xinitrc says

xloadimage -onroot /etc/X11/xdm/xdmbg.gif
/usr/bin/gnome-session

Can you help me?
