Development Environment

Gnomers,
I am a newbie to Linux/Unix. I just purchased "Developing Linux
Applications with GTK+ and GDK" and I want to start writing "stuff". I
will be writing a review shortly.

I am asking for advice on how to setup a decent development
environment for GTK+/Gnome.
