I was getting "You already have Gnome Panel running" type message, so
ran the gnome-cleanup script. That got rid of the panel error, but I
don't have speech back since. Speculating a volume at 0. Will need to
check with someone.

on't know about resources, but will also check. I have FC5 plus GUI on 3
machines here.
