running Gnome apps on an ssh session

Hi.  I'm having problems running gedit over an ssh session to another
box.  When I type "gedit" from my gnome terminal, gedit starts, but
nothing is spoken by Gnopernicus.  Do I need to set environment vars on
the remote box?  If so, what vars and what values?  Same questions for
the local box.
