China built and completed various vessels of 4.46m dwt in 2002 and continue to occupy the world third place following Korea and Japan in terms of completion tonnage in the past eight years. CSSC and CSIC total complete vessels of 2.6m dwt, accounting for 60% of completion tonnage and the remaining 40% is completed by local shipyards.
17. Ship-owner interest in Double-hull Bulkers
Enquiries are coming in for what would be the first double hull panamax bulkers, in response to the IMO's moves to tighten up on bulk carrier safety, but shipyards are keener to fill the scant remaining berth space with higher value tanker orders. Brokers have interest in double hull bulker both capesize and panamax size, and say discussions are in progress with Korean and Chinese shipyards. But yards' attention is firmly focused on netting more lucrative tanker orders, while owners remain bullish in the current climate of sky-high rates.
