INITIAL OBSERVATIONS
----------------------
* desktop is "faster"
* menus are faster
* desktop sound server works.
* sound for monkey-bubble is messed up
starts OK and then turns into a sequence of low frequency clicks.

* ignoring the apps that depend on gstreamer, not everything works quite
right:

- volume control applet
right click used to bring up a single slider that controlled the master
volume.  The slider has gone missing

contacts and calendar events have also gone missing
