Hi Graham.
I also run Slackware, and what I generally do after building garnome, is 
explode the original Slackware gdm package and grab all files out of 
etc/X11/dm/Sessions, and put them intop the relevant gdm path for Garnome, 
in my case /opt/gnome-2.6rc1/etc/dm/Sessions.

I then also copy the Xsession file from the original Slackware gdm package 
and place it in /opt/gnome-2.6rc1/etc/gdm as Patrick originally copied the 
XFree86 Xsession file to GDM for some reason.

Everything worked for me as expected then.

BTW. You have set all your paths, and put the Garnome library paths into 
/etc/ld.so.conf?
