SysV-InitEditor crashes in KDE 3.0.2 on RH7.3



I successfully built KDE 3.0.2 on top of Red Hat 7.3 (a thin
installation with "X" and "X Classic" but neither Gnome nor KDE).
I did not change anything except to set the prefix to
/opt/garnome in gar.conf.mk

Things generally work fine, but the SysV-Init Editor crashes. On
my first invocation attempt (as root) it asked me to select my
distro. I filled in Red Hat, and then it crashed.

On subsequent invocations it crashes immediately, with the
following backtrace:
