Sidebar Crashes in Nautilus

Whenever I start up a Nautilus window, I get three error dialogs saying:


The Tree|Notes|History sidebar panel encountered an error and can't continue. If this keeps happening, you might want to turn this panel off.

I think this is related to the following bugzilla item:  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75635

that can occur when you have both  Gnome 1.4 and 2.x installed, because of some strange libtool stuff.  I tried the fix suggested in the bug report and it didn't work for me.  Has anybody out there successfully compiled Nautilus while still having gnome 1.4 installed?
