There's nothing to replace this functionality.

Say you are in a folder with thousands of messages, all read, and are
using a threaded message view and/or get an email with a date in the
past.  It may appear far above the current message in the tree.  The
only way to quickly locate the message in the tree is to hide read
messages, select the message, and unhide read messages.

And please don't say the 'Unread Mail' vfolder duplicates this
functionality.
