Just yesterday I was thankful for this option when I was checking out
some image at the pixel level (doing some themeing), so it does have a
purpose (if not the quite in everyday use category). Also, if you zoom
close enough, the interpolation (or smoothing in general) just blurs
and distorts the pixels without purpose so some maximum zoom level for
smoothing would be smart anyway.
