Hm, I am using a laptop with touchpad so I can't check this behavior :).

AFAICT it wasn't removed intentionally. It must be got broken somewhere on
the gnome2 transition road. Maybe it's even because of some changes in
GTK+. I don't know. But I think too this is a nice feature. Can you file a
bug report for this in bugzilla? This way we don't forget about it.
