Adding desktop files to panel menu

Hi all,

I'm trying to add some code to create new items in the panel menu (just 
for the current user). I've  figured that I need a .desktop for the menu 
item and that I need to modify/create a .vfolder-info file to include 
the .desktop file.

How do I go about this - is this done with gnome-vfs, if so how, is 
there any example code or another app I can look at for clues?
