Problems with gnome-terminal in 2.4

Hi!
I can't make my gnome-terminal start with a decent 'character coding'.
Everytime I start it, it is in a weird encoding (oops, I can't remember
which, but it is really weird). I would like to have it in ISO-8859-15,
for example. I've tried to change LC_ALL, LC_CTYPE, LANG and so on, but
it seems that nothing works.
