I thought what he was describing was something like the ROX options
system, which has a GLADE-like interface description file connecting
widgets (or groups of widgets) to configuration variables -- except
that this would connect them directly to GConf keys. That sounds like
a reasonable approach to me, and I don't really see why it shouldn't
be possible to produce a decent interface that way...
