After thinking about this for a moment,
I am leaning towards considering this a
feature and not a bug :)

The explanation:
If the user has several mailboxes open
and then changes in Preferences the size
format, what is the most desirable action:
a. only re-display the currently shown
mailbox in the new format?
b. change all open mailboxes immediately to
the new format?
c. apply the new format only to the
mailboxes that will open afterwards (current
behaviour)?

Before I start hacking I'd like to know what
people think...
