Thanks for the update. How much material do people have already? It doesn't have to be anywhere near approaching final draft quality - notes (even handwritten ones!) and sketches are enough for us to be getting started with. This is time-critical for us (the hackfest is next week), so anything that you guys can provide would be very welcome. There is barely any material right now, and it is all in an experimental state. The HIG 3 will happen, but we'll be targeting a future release. I'd really like the GNOME 3 porting guide in good shape for the release [1] however, and there are a few pages of draft developer documentation that you might be interested in (though you should probably check with their authors before shipping them) [2, 3]. I've been giving this a little more thought. There are a small number of new design patterns which we are going to be pushing in GNOME 3, and some draft guidance does exist for these. They include: * Symbolic icons * Inline toolbars for editable lists (be aware: theming work on these is ongoing!) * Notifications * Application naming If you're looking for something to do, and you fancied cobbling a small HIG GNOME 3 update document together, that would be very cool! :) http://live.gnome.org/ThreePointZero/AppIntegration http://live.gnome.org/UsabilityProject/HIG3/EditableLists http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Whiteboards/SymbolicIcons/UseGuidelines http://gitorious.org/gnome-design/gnome-design/blobs/master/mockups/theming/widget-inline-toolbar.png Allan -- Blog: http://afaikblog.wordpress.com/ IRC: aday on irc.gnome.org From prvs=0051ab2318=marc.redemske@student.afg.hs-anhalt.de Fri Mar 11 20:52:13 2011 Return-Path: X-Original-To: usability@gnome.org Delivered-To: usability@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 23406750294 for ; Fri, 11 Mar 2011 20:52:13 +0000 (UTC) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.91 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.91 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-1.9, T_RP_MATCHES_RCVD=-0.01] autolearn=ham Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id UnaT09QUzSzx for ; Fri, 11 Mar 2011 20:52:10 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail2.afg.hs-anhalt.de (mail2.afg.hs-anhalt.de [193.25.43.33]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 81C04750102 for ; Fri, 11 Mar 2011 20:52:01 +0000 (UTC) Received: from p5dde1540.dip.t-dialin.net ([93.222.21.64]:60043 helo=[192.168.2.107]) by mail2.afg.hs-anhalt.de with esmtpsa (TLSv1:CAMELLIA256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1Py9JT-0003qz-31; Fri, 11 Mar 2011 21:51:56 +0100 X-CTCH-RefID: str=0001.0A0B0206.4D7A8B6C.001A,ss=1,fgs=0 Message-ID: <4D7A8B77.3040302@student.afg.hs-anhalt.de> Date: Fri, 11 Mar 2011 21:52:07 +0100 From: Marc Redemske User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.16) Gecko/20101125 SUSE/3.0.11 Thunderbird/3.0.11 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Calum Benson References: <1299765097.4421.79.camel@panther> <4D78FDF3.6080803@shaw.ca> <4D792789.2010307@student.afg.hs-anhalt.de> <4985BB84-1318-4AEC-9CE2-8E5DFB31CF13@oracle.com> In-Reply-To: <4985BB84-1318-4AEC-9CE2-8E5DFB31CF13@oracle.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: usability@gnome.org Subject: Re: [Usability] State of the HIG? Now say I want to: a) email it to someone b) edit it with a different program (not necessarily the default program associated with it) c) copy/move it somewhere else Seems for many GUIs I often have to go through the process of looking for the file again before being able to do a), b) or c). I can't quickly specify/pass to a different application "this file" I'm working on, or "the file I just saved", or the URL/path to that file, or even copy the URL/path of the file to the clipboard (so that I can paste it to "open" dialog or a file location bar). Some applications of course support a "send as email" in their file menu, but this is not a standard across all apps. Some applications trigger the "Recent Documents" but not all of them. Shouldn't the GUI be able to know the path of "Documents" that have been opened/saved/renamed by the application (at least those opened/saved/renamed by the standard methods - e.g. standard "Open"/"Save As" Dialog, or "launched" by the GUI)? What is the recommended GNOME way of doing this quickly? Regards, Link. I don't really know actually. I kinda like Ubuntu's theme but I'm ready to be convinced that we could do best with a different approach (I know for example that Will doesn't like it for a bunch of reasons, I'll ask him to share them with us).
