Otherwise, pick either a single timezone (say, the one where most people on a project work) or a universal time system (typically UTC, but possibly UT1 or TAI for scientific projects) and use it consistently. I'm trying to figure out how to use the INTERPOLATION function, but I'm not quite sure how to use it. I've been reading up on using functions, but I get an error saying "Invalid expression" when I try to use this function. I do the following: 1. Enter some data in A1 to A3 (eg. 1, 2, 3) and in B1 to B3 (eg. 2, 4, 6) 2. In A4 I enter: 4 3. I enter the following expression in B4: =INTERPOLATION(A1:A3,B1:B3,A4) What I'm trying to do is interpolate for the X-value in A4, using the three X-values in A1, A2, A3 and three Y-values in B1, B2, B3, and placing the result in B4. What am I doing wrong? If you are using a decimal comma rather than a decimal point (period), then your locale likely uses the semicolon as an argument separator and it should be: =INTERPOLATION(A1:A3;B1:B3;A4) If you use insert->formula to create teh expression then the correct argument separator will be used automatically. So far it's going good. It seems the FORECAST and TREND functions do what I want, which is take all the data into account, and calculate the future value based on what best fits all my data points. FORECAST and TREND produce the same result when I use it on my data. I have read that TREND basically uses LINEST to calculate its future value, and as far as I can see, FORECAST is the same as TREND except that it only calculates a single future value, compared to TREND's ability to calculate multiple future values. Now the thing that I find strange is the following. When I apply LINEST to my data, and thus obtain the slope of the regression line, and the y-intercept of the line, and use *these* numbers to calculate my desired future value (which should be how TREND does it, right?), I get a different future result than I get when I use TREND. The future values I obtain from TREND and from using the output of LINEST are the following, respectively: 40407.91963867 and 40407.94565792. Since this number represents a point in time, the difference amounts to 37 minutes and 28 seconds, which I think is quite a bit. Can anyone explain why I'm seeing this discrepancy? The command line doesn`t come up with any errors. When i try to import an .xls file i get "An unexplained error happened while opening" error msg. I can`t export any .xls files either. Gnumeric works just fine otherwise. Btw I can`t upgrade to 1.10.5 because 1.8.2 is the version supported by my distro. Any ideas ? Thanks a lot. I am seeing very flakey behavior. The cursor changes to the solid cross, and I can't get menus, switch to other sheets, etc. Keyboard input is fine. I noticed this first in a spreadsheet, but I can get this to happen if I just select "About" from the help menu. After doing that, and quiting the "About", I am left with the solid cursor. I thought it was a hardware problem, but 1.9.3 doesn't show this difficulty. But is this conversion safe in case of macro viruses? At least excel can have those, I don't know about the other two. I plan on using this to implement spreadsheet import in the LyX document processor. But this will be allowed *only* if there is a guarantee that "ssconvert" can be used safely. So I wonder: Will ssconvert merely read the spreadsheet and output some latex code, or are there cases where it will also execute script code embedded in the spreadsheet? In the latter case, is there a way of avoiding this, such as using options for suppressing such scripts. I do not worry about ssconvert doing math calculation, the problem is script/macro languages capable of reading/writing arbitrary files, or even executing arbitrary binaries. Such things makes it possible to propagate a macro virus, a capability that is not allowed. What do you mean by "link"? A new formula is formatted based on the result type we estimate it will have. So for a call to PV we assume a monitary format, for a call to SUM we go look in the arguments and see if one of them has a format. And so on. If I enter 100 in sheet 2, format it as currency so it appears as $100, then copy and paste it into sheet 1 (Sheet2!$A$1) I have to reformat it again in sheet 1 as currency. I would expect the format of a 'link' like this to be the same as the original cell. If u paste it into the windows version of gnumeric, it does NOT work - gnumeric freezes. The only way, therefore, I can use gnumeric windows version is by using firefox with the copy as plain text addon. I hope this problem can be recognised and fixed in future window versions. I particularily hope so because, otherwise, gnumeric is simply superb. -- View this message in context: http://old.nabble.com/Gnumeric-for-windows-paste-from-websites-problem-tp28977775p28977775.html Sent from the GnuMeric mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
