f-spot does pretty much everything I want. The problems are bugs and 
instability. I'm not worried about new features and I'm perfectly happy 
using a dated, mature product if it does what I want. I only abandoned 
xmms when it became too difficult to install on new distros; it still 
beats a lot of the modern eye-candy hands down.

I've said this before once (or maybe twice):
I can't pick up development on my own since I don't have the time, but
if there was someone else (than me) actively engaging in the maintainer
role, I think I could do a small bit of coding to fix stuff that annoys
me.

That said, the porting effort towards Gtk# 3 could be hard to pull off
with only two, kinda-slightly dedicated developers who are both new to
the code base. Anyone else who would like to step up to help?

Ok, I can not (and would not want to) help with f-spot development,
but I could probably help with the migration from f-spot to some other
program with well defined database format (which, by the way, f-spot
certainly has not --- and as the author of f_spot_cleanup,
http://www.svenutcke.de/sw/f-spot/cleanup/ , I know what I am talking
about :-).  

If you think that would be useful, let me know where to you would like
to migrate, and if there are enough people proclaiming interest, I'll
hack something together to export your f-spot database to that target.

Hello Sven and list,

Before somebody starts spending time writing such a tool from scracth, I wrote 
a python script to migrate from f-spot to digikam. I have used it with my 
collection of around 10000 pictures and works pretty well. At least for me, 
since I could not test this with any other installations! It can migrate tags

That's actually just for adding tags (faces found by my face-detection
and identification suit, http://www.svenutcke.de/sw/Face/ ) to digikam
(and could be improved some, to become even more compatible to
digikam's inbuild face detection, which I found lacking --- but then,
I'm biased :-)

While I do not actively know about such software, I would suspect that
many will do this is not only the file, but the entire directory is
missing (that certainly is the default for f_spot_cleanup), so you
could try that; alternatively, it is quite possible that there are
programs out there which only validate the database when asked to do
so, and those might work too (also that would be a bit risky)...

Thank you very much for sharing!  Did you test this with names
containing non-ascii characters?  If so, what version of Python did
you test against (I had some trouble to get urllib.unquote to work in
anything from Python 2.5 to 2.7)?

After a quick look this ought to work for at least f-spot 0.8.x, and
probably 0.7.x to (not quite sure when f-spot changed to database
version 17)

Hi Sven,

yes, it also works with non-ascii filenames. As for the python version, I 
tested this with 2.7 (ubuntu 11.04) so it's strange that you got problems. I 
will check again once I'm home, in case I forgot to undo some testing 
environment or something like that.

Sorry, I didn't express myself properly --- I'm sure your code works
just fine; it was my code I problems with (making this work in any
single Python version was easy, just making it work relyably for more
than one version of Python was a pain).

Greetings from your Debian and Ubuntu maintainer,

f-spot hasn't seen any substantive code commit for several months
now[0]. While development was rapid and exciting when Ruben took over,
this momentum has sadly stalled, and I think we'll all agree that
serious bug fixing and UI effort is needed. I have to admit that I've
been recently using Shotwell because the experience just feels nicer.

I've come to the upsetting conclusion that f-spot ought to be declared
dormant until a new maintainer comes along to lead the project. In
particular, without the prospect of bugs being looked at, I'd like to
stop shipping it in distribution releases. It's especially going to be
left behind with the migration to newer GNOME 3 technologies, not least
of which is GTK+3.

Do the developers agree?

Hello.
   Can anyone tell me what the large circle symbol means.  It has
replaced many of my photos and I want to get rid of it.  Also, the
photos I downloaded today were on the screen but they disappeared
leaving only the day. I am fairly new at F-spotand I would greatly
appreciate any help.  Thank you.

I talked to Ruben a bit and I think I'll try and put up some of the
f-spot stuff.  As I learn the code base I'll try and update things and
clean up things that don't need to be in there anymore.  Of course
working towards a gtk 3 port.  I'm looking at the banshee stuff and
seeing what they have done so far.

Could it be the default symbol for missing pictures? Is this happening
in the overview? What happens when you double click any of those circle

So you see a blank space instead of the photo? Same question here: what
happens if you click on the pictures (or the place where they're
supposed to be)?

If those symbols are leftovers of pictures you deleted manually you
might want to try Sven Utcke's clean-up script:

Hi,

I want to use zlib for my plugin, but there are no readily packaged Mono
bindings available. (or other readily available QR-Code readers for that
matter)

There is a github with working code available though:
https://github.com/jopsen/zbar-sharp

I think it's a not very elegant solution to deliver a compiled DLL with
the plugin, but I never packaged and/or maintained one and it seems a
little more work to get it accepted than I can put in it right now.

What do you think would be the easiest solution? Especially in regards
towards usability for the user (doesn't have to download source and
compile in order to get my plugin running)?

Hi,

I finally wrote my add-in for semi-automatically correcting photos'
times and posted a patch against the repository and a binary on my blog:

It's quite alpha and I intend to polish it until it can get into the
