Thanks. Actually Lucas Beeler alrady took a look, then asked me to fix the patch after something else was committed (also a patch from me), which I did immediately, after that nothing happened. In the Library view, select the photos with the grayed-out thumbnails. 2. Choose Auto-Enhance. 3. When completed, choose Edit -> Undo. Shotwell should regenerate the thumbnails and the Undo will remove the auto-enhancement from the images so you're back to where you started. If this doesn't work, let us know! -- Jim On Sun, Dec 2, 2012 at 4:24 PM, Christian wrote: Hi, I'n using Shotwell 0.13.0 on Ubuntu 13.10 x64. The png files are typically 10MB and I find that if I convert them to jpg the size reduces to around 1.5MB with no discernible reduction in quality. In retrospect I would of course have been better to convert before importing and tagging but it is too late for that now. Following experimentation it appears that if I convert each file to jpg in the Shotwell pictures directories (using imagemagick, which appears to retain the metadata) then when I start Shotwell (with Watch for New Files set) then it automatically imports the jpg files and correctly picks up the tags from the metadata in the image. If I then delete the original images I guess they should be moved to Missing Files from where I can remove them from the library. Can anyone see any problems with this? Perhaps there is a better way. I couldn't find one that preserved photo modifications, ratings and captions so I ended up writing my own as a Python script. I've shared the code on github: https://github.com/fasaxc/shotwell-iphoto-import It seems to work so far but that's only on one library! It doesn't support videos yet and it skips files that I don't think are supported by shotwell (such as gifs and psds). I did have a go at writing the importer as a plugin for Shotwell itsefl but I realised that it was going to need quite large changes to the plugin framework to make it work (and a big time investment from me to learn enough vala). Specifically, I'd have needed to add a way to import an externally-edited version of a photo along with the original, which I think is missing right now. I'm happy to help you make it into a Shotwell plugin if you want. The main complication of writing it in Vala will be that you will have to re-implement plistlib. It certainly doesn't look impossible as the parser is fairly simple (according to the code) but still a bit of work. Otherwise, in order to deal with externally edited photos, you could do what the F-Spot import does at the moment and import each version as a different photo. It's not ideal but is a good way to work until Shotwell supports that feature. Among many other Shotwell-related tasks we've had to temporarily wait on, this has been one of the most-frequently requested ones, and we want to let you know that we haven't forgotten about everyone who'd asked for this. To add the PPA containing this build to your Ubuntu Quantal installation, simply do the following: 1) From the command line, type 'sudo apt-add-repository ppa:yorba/ppa' and supply your password as needed. 2) Type 'sudo apt-get update'. 3) Type 'sudo apt-get upgrade shotwell'. If there's components that are only available in Python, that would save a lot of work since you could just write the plugins in Python directly. This is ticked here: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3408 Note that it's currently assigned to any milestone or developer so I can't say when it will be available. But if anyone's interested in taking the libpeas port on please email us first so we can discuss some implementation details. - Eric From jim at yorba.org Tue Dec 11 21:53:44 2012 From: jim at yorba.org (Jim Nelson) Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2012 21:45:44 -0008 Subject: [Shotwell] Converting files already imported and tagged from png to jpg In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <50c7ab60.05bf440a.60fe.ffff8275@mx.google.com> Colin, the only problem I see in this method is that most of Shotwell's transformations (color correction, straighten, red-eye) are not stored as metadata in the file, so those won't be converted. ?Orientation (i.e. rotation) will if you have metadata writing turned on (which will also store tags in the metadata). Otherwise, I think the technique you describe will work just fine. -- Jim On Thu, Dec 6, 2012 at 5:59 AM, Colin Law wrote: I have a large number of png files imported into Shotwell and tagged, with the metadata being written to the files. OK, thanks. The images were all processed before being imported so that is not a problem. Thanks, I will give it a go. I have the images and shotwell db backed up so even if I mess up I should be able to recover ok. Some thoughts that I have here: first, Shotwell used to use GConf for storing configuration information. Second, Shotwell now uses GSettings. Third, on your system (and this may be true of Gentoo systems in general) GSettings calls map into a GConf backend. This is why you see this entry: > /usr/lib64/gio/modules/libgsettingsgconfbackend.so(+0x4433)[0x7fe8c9e94433] in your stack trace. So it's possible that a previous version of Shotwell, one that still used GConf, left some detritus in your GConf configuration database that is now confusing the GSettings -> GConf mapper. So I'd recommend you try the following. Using either the gconf-editor or the GConf command line tools, delete your entire /apps/shotwell/ and /org/yorba/shotwell/ trees in your GConf database. You will lose some configuration information (most notably, you might have to log into certain publishing services again) but this should eliminate any possibility of confusing the settings mapper library. Some thoughts that I have here: first, Shotwell used to use GConf for storing configuration information. Second, Shotwell now uses GSettings. Third, on your system (and this may be true of Gentoo systems in general) GSettings calls map into a GConf backend. This is why you see this entry: > > > /usr/lib64/gio/modules/libgsettingsgconfbackend.so(+0x4433)[0x7fe8c9e94433] > > in your stack trace. > > Lucas Hi Lucas, thank you for taking the time to look this over. I did 'rm -rf .gconf/org/yorba/shotwell' and things seem to be working now. I did not have .gconf/apps/shotwell. I should also mention that I checked the Portage log and for sure I've never installed shotwell before I installed this instance of 0.13.1. Then on the Open With tab check that the Default Application is your preferred video player. If it is not then set it accordingly and click Set as Default at the bottom of the dialog.
