If there is a clash name in the flat list, never mind that's ok for me, softwares should implement hierarchical tags and you don't have to overcome this.
AFAIK, it is allowed to have duplicated keywords in the photo metadata
in the xmp.dc.subject field. I personally don't like it, but it won't
produce errors.
> An other point is concerning importing photos already tagged. In f-spot, if the tags don't already exist in the hierarchy, they are put in a "category" named 'Imported tags', so they don't pollute my hierarchy and I know I have something to do with those tags (I don't know if shotwell implements the same behaviour). A similar principle could be used when shotwell can't decide between tags with the same name in different parts of the hierarchy. It doesn't block the import and you can treat the photos when you'll have time.
Agree with that. Unfortunately, the current behaviour is rather
annoying. When you import from F-spot, Shotwell will:
1. import correctly the tags hierarchy from F-spot database
2. forget completely about the freshly made tags tree
3. duplicate each and every tag from the actual picture metadata as
new root-level tags.
No use for an 'Imported tags' category, as (almost) every tag will go
there in a flat list.
I reckon there is already a ticket for that, so I think it'll be
resolved sooner or later.

In addition to that wishlist (that I stripped out as mainly not
tag-related), I'd like a simple interface showing all the tags we can
read with the current used library (i think exiv2 is used), with the
option of filling in empty fields or changing existing ones. Let's say
an 'advanced' metadata view.
I do know there are much more tags than needed--coming from different
standards--but we already have applications doing that in a pretty
decent way (I am thinking on Geeqie, offering via right-click the
option of choosing which metadata to show in the main window, and if
they should be editable (only the xmp, but these are the ones we are
already using, aren't they?)
Ciao ciao,
Piergi
