I agree with that. The expected behaviour when you tag a file is :
- in the hierarchical field, the full hierarchical structure of the tags given (and main field used by shotwell),
- in the flat list, for compatibility reasons with other softwares that may not understand hierarchical tags, to only use tags explicitly assigned by the user (and not parents). If there is a clash name in the flat list, never mind that's ok for me, softwares should implement hierarchical tags and you don't have to overcome this.
An other point is concerning importing photos already tagged. In f-spot, if the tags don't already exist in the hierarchy, they are put in a "category" named 'Imported tags', so they don't pollute my hierarchy and I know I have something to do with those tags (I don't know if shotwell implements the same behaviour). A similar principle could be used when shotwell can't decide between tags with the same name in different parts of the hierarchy. It doesn't block the import and you can treat the photos when you'll have time.
And thanks for shotwell, I still miss some features to switch, mainly (sorry for the wishlist :->) :
- as number 1, multi-user on a single computer of the same collection ie me and my wife,
- a screensaver with photos of a chosen tag,
- folder view or management,
- easier send by mail facility (it's more user-friendly in f-spot),
- versioning (but not so often used),
- a "collection view"/"single photo view" switch (it's easier when you have clicked on a photo to go back to the previous collection view than the way it is done now),
- a collection view when you click a year or a month in the events instead of the key photos,
- move photos/movies in the right folders when you change the date (if you use that sort of hierarchy),
- and some others I don't remember for now, I think all of that is already covered by tickets.
But it's already a good software.
