I just wanted to let you know that I have created shotwell packages for Fedora. They should appear in rawhide over the next few days (we are in alpha freeze right now, which will delay this by a few days), and thus also be awailable in Fedora 12 when it is released later this year. After playing with shotwell for a while, I must say that I have high hopes for it to become a perfect fit for out gap in the 'simple photo management' space. I'd say it really only misses two things before we could consider it as a replacement for gthumb in this area: - Web upload - Translations I've also come across a few bugs in my testing. Do you prefer to get those reported on this list, or filed in trac ? Thanks for this promising application, Matthias From adam at yorba.org Thu Aug 13 13:09:06 2009 From: adam at yorba.org (Adam Dingle) Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2009 06:09:06 -0700 Subject: [Shotwell] Shotwell Fedora packages In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4A841072.10204@yorba.org> Matthias, this is great news - we've wanted Shotwell to be available in Fedora for a while now. Thanks a lot for your help with this. Internationalizing Shotwell is a relatively high priority for us and should happen this fall. Web uploading is also on our list. We'll probably implement uploading to Facebook and Flickr, and will have a plugin-based system so that anyone can easily write a plugin that uploads to a different site. Exporting to a set of HTML pages (like gThumb's Web Album feature) is also a possibility, and in fact might just be a different plugin. > I've also come across a few bugs in my testing. Message-ID: <1250540758.8296.13.camel@ms394> hello there! Really nice - an new image viewer for gnome - something i have really been looking forward to. Where f-spot is slow, overbloated and has an ugly way of saving images in per-day-folders, gthumb has a working but outdated interface and no feature to browse a big collection of images in a time line (an no in-image-tagging support). So big applause to shotwell! My first impression is... i like it. it looks modern, easy to use, fast and responsive. Nice: * nice, easy, functional interface * nice way of organising images per event or in timeline But maybe its not too late for some wishes and suggestions: * make images load faster In image viewer it takes some time until the image is clearly visible. If possible: Please, make it faster. Maybe remove the dotty image first shown - is something like "preloading" the next image possible? - Decoding jpegs is really slow with libjpeg, isn't it? * add tag support saved to image file Adding tags stored in the image files is an important approach to sort a huge collection * cropping works great - let me choose the ratio cropping is as easy and functional as it could be with shotwell - but for many reasons i need certain aspect ratios. If i could preselect it or select once and shotwell remembered my choice - cropping a number of images would be a charm. * let me choose how long to display an image in slideshowmode this is really annoying in f-spot - you can do a lot but not change the duration an image is shown in a slideshow? I never understood that. PLease, let me decide... * keep the way i can work with my keybord - ist nice and simply works! I tried digikam some days ago - space for next is ok, but backspace to go back? Try it yourself, it' s no fun. * improve remove dialog well, maybe it is the german translation: Should i "delete" or "keep files"? "Delete" means delete image in library and corresponding file? "Keep files" means delete from library only? * What i like despite all is that original images are untouched. but maybe an option to save them somewhere i can find them later easily (hidden folder in original folder? renamed version in original folder?) would be a nice thing. I enjoyed supporting shotwell development with my feedback and hope it will grow to a mighty means! It's certainly not too late for wishlist items or suggestions. We're always looking for more user input as means of direction. Regarding image display, performance and scalability is something we're about to take a hard look at. We want Shotwell to be responsive and smooth in all circumstances and situations. I encourage you to check out our Trac system at http://trac.yorba.org Our wiki there has more information on Shotwell and the other applications we're working on here at Yorba. If you sign up for Trac, you can add tickets and make comments on existing ones. (I'll go ahead and add the ones you've listed.) However, it doesn't yet have PicasaWeb export support, which I use F-Spot for quite frequently. I realise it's probably a way down the to-do list, but when you do get around to implementing it, may I suggest you make use of libgdata[1]? It's a C library I maintain which allows applications to interact with Google services, including PicasaWeb. We've recently acquired Vala bindings, which live in Vala's repository. At the moment, our PicasaWeb upload support is probably a little shaky, since nothing uses it (as far as I'm aware), so it hasn't been tested too much. However, if you were to use it, I would be able to work on any problems or omissions which arose, and generally help you in getting things working. Using libgdata makes a lot of sense, especially if Vala bindings are available. Right now Web exporting is a bit down the list, but we'll let people know when we get to it. If you want to take a crack at implementing such a system, please let us know -- we're always looking for help!
