developer-old.gnome.org is not updated any more. The latest version
of the gtkmm tutorial is stored at
https://gnome.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/gtkmm-documentation.
I'm not super happy with it though. Trusting users to unparent
from both places without the framework enforcing or at least
verifying it is problematic.
Writing custom container widgets, derived directly from Gtk::Widget,
was more difficult in gtkmm3 than it is in gtkmm4. I think very few
gtkmm users ever did it. And like you say, it's far from perfect in
gtkmm4.
