modify widget fonts

I tried to do this using the widget::modify_font() method, my attempt
is here:

but that does not work and no one seems to have any thots.  Perhaps
this is only for text and entry widgets?  Or what is modify_font for?

What I specifically want to do is set some messages to bold in a
StatusBar, but I may also want to (eg) set the text color/style on
certain buttons.  

Which there must be a way to do that.  Anyone hints? :)
