I compiled debian package sources 0.3.5-2 with "./configure
--prefix=/tmp --without-python" and then run "./examples/gvncviewer".
Then: no patch => no {[\ ]}, with patch => {[\ ]} all come.

What server are you connecting to? 0.3.5 has a bunch of key handling fixes so if the problem still exists with 0.3.5, then it's a bug.
