Well, the embedded controller in most laptops gives typically 8 steps of
brightness -- I think the Macbook and Macbook Pro have 200ish although
they won't dim that low. At the end of the day most backlight CFL's are
designed for a high light output. You could try putting a polarising
filter in front of the TFT, that'll block some light.
All out of better ideas, sorry.
