Thanks for your time and thoughts on this. 

I'll have a detailed look at Grilo (sounds good - but I
don't think UPnP is relevant?)

If it not suitable, I'll use apt-get to help with
installing a environment to build a Totem plugin...

Or if I really have some free time on my hands -
gnome-3-dev!
