I'd recommend using jhbuild to have a testing environment parallel to
your "stable" distribution.

In case of issues (you *will* run into problems) also see
http://live.gnome.org/JhbuildIssues .

For developing I'd recommend http://live.gnome.org/Git/Developers as a
starting point.
