[gnome-love] gnome-menu-control from xbindkeys?

I'm having problems getting gnome-menu-control to behave when invoked
by xbindkeys. My ~/.xbindkyes contains:

  "/usr/bin/gnome-panel-control --main-menu"
    alt + F1

but when I hit alt+F1 all that happens is that the Applications menu is
highlighted, it doesn't actullay drop down like it should. When doing it
from a terminal it works like it should... Any ideas on why this is and
how I fix it?

/M
