Using SANE?

I'm thinking of using SANE (rather than udev like we do now) to get
the list of scanners, and hopefully to be able to change settings on
the device. It also allows us to change remote devices, not just
locally plugged in USB ones. Is sane-backends-libs a problem for you
distro guys? I'm not sure if it's installed by default on most
distros, but it does pull in a few deps.
