Hey,

another option would be to write an external tool that simply does gsettings set on that specific setting.
In this case, it make the parameter kept after closing.

The plugin of Jeffery works like a charm, and the default option is kept, what I wanted. Just when editing. If I want to make it default, I will use the Edit => Preference menu.

Thanks

First, as pbor said, the GIO conventions for async operations should be followed, also for reporting the progress. gedit stores some files metadata, such as the encoding, the syntax highlighting mode, the cursor position, and maybe others. Some of these metadata can be useful in GtkSourceView, but as a first step it is simpler to keep this in gedit. GeditDocument knows its location (a GFile), and currently it is not possible to save the document to another file without changing the location property. In gsv, there should be a property with the default location, and being able to save the buffer to another location independently. It should also be possible to change the encoding of opened files, but it's more on the gedit side. Just keep this in mind. API idea -------- Have a GtkSourceFile class, a subclass of GFile. (as a side note, I'm not sure it is possible to subclass GFile, because it is an interface... It's more logical to have a is-a relationship, but if it's not possible, another solution is to have a location property in GtkSourceFile, with the has-a relationship) GtkSourceFile would have the following properties: - encoding - newline-type - compression-type - buffer (construct-only) GtkSourceBuffer would have a "file" property, for the default location. The property can be NULL for a new buffer. GtkSourceFile would have functions for loading and saving the file into/from the buffer. GtkSourceBuffer and GtkSourceFile would have a one-to-many relationship: the buffer can have a default file, and the buffer can be saved in other files. This has the advantage to not inflate GtkSourceBuffer too much (just one more property), and have a flexible API. GtkSourceFile can be extended later with the content-type, the mime-type, functions for displaying the file name in various ways, sending a signal when the file is externally modified (with a GFileMonitor), etc. Another API idea ---------------- More like the gedit API. In GtkSourceBuffer, have the following properties: - location (a GFile) - encoding - newline-type - compression-type Have a GtkSourceBufferLoader and Saver classes, with a buffer parameter. Take the above properties as default values, but duplicate the properties to be able to change them independently of the buffer. Or merge the loader and saver into GtkSourceFileOperation or something like that. ----- I prefer the first idea with GtkSourceFile :-) What do you think? Did I miss something in the requirements? If not, I'll take the GtkSourceFile path, and see how it goes. Cheers, Sébastien From sebastien.wilmet@gmail.com Tue Dec 10 17:22:42 2013 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by restaurant.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 57EC476936 for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2013 17:22:42 +0000 (UTC) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: 0.1 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=0.1 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_50=0.8, DKIM_SIGNED=0.1, DKIM_VALID=-0.1, FREEMAIL_FROM=0.001, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_LOW=-0.7, SPF_PASS=-0.001] autolearn=ham Received: from restaurant.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (restaurant.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id kOECE3XjbtLz for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2013 17:22:40 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail-ee0-f45.google.com (mail-ee0-f45.google.com [74.125.83.45]) by restaurant.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 95A3A768D0 for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2013 17:22:29 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-ee0-f45.google.com with SMTP id d49so2394035eek.4 for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2013 09:22:28 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=sender:date:from:to:subject:message-id:mail-followup-to:references :mime-version:content-type:content-disposition :content-transfer-encoding:in-reply-to:user-agent; bh=YctLt9AcWrRry06mtaV2lCE1iHknjVFCuHeAr8fm354=; b=Vndpvl7LFiA0j86AxfNao1Xm4UUCm4wQbBQKNuRNy04YNSUhAsvCD7yNj2tnk5ZoiR Jey6Q0De201RnsFjOaufOHFuULOwtj0khJkM7IF3RUhPfaamSBipo+Jx9Z75wlLlZjES i1JW5kKU0qtsJ7NJ2DUVnN7S50WNrOf9SblJFZYiVGBSbi95gQyXHT/gfka1z4UXFY+k TeYvZ9PkMh60oEeHDuQ408F6oTLmTphYDb8LkFjRma0pLs2YxT1LjkpVOC3ApLuXGGew QoOflDFU+ALtGAs61QFBupBbrhLjMCpQ9lrR+r0UtSEc2Dcw/rVy7C9t85UTGAJnt6L0 Ji5Q== X-Received: by 10.14.223.198 with SMTP id v46mr19177244eep.20.1386696146534; Tue, 10 Dec 2013 09:22:26 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (38.226-240-81.adsl-dyn.isp.belgacom.be. After discussion on IRC, here are more thoughts, and nice-to-have things. It's more a note to myself, instead of losing the information in IRC logs. ----- 1 - the current loader/saver are nice because they give you progress during an operation, but it kind of suck that they block editing, I think it would be nice to just quickly mirror a snaphot of the content into the sourcefile and let save happen without blocking edit what I mean could simply be - freeze the doc from any modification - push data to a buffered stream big enough for common cases - if all the content was streamed, thaw the doc at that point the user can go on editing and the saving can happen async obviously for a 100 MB log it would not work but I do not care about that case that case can still block Taking a real snapshot of the buffer would be too complicated. Text insertions and deletions should be recorded, and cancelled when reading the buffer. It's probably also feasible, but pbor's solution is easier, and sufficient for our use cases. One thing to also remember: really big files are generally generated (logs, code documentation, …), so they are more read-only. ----- 2 - it is a bit of a pipe dream, since it never materialized, but it would be cool to keep in mind how the proposed api would fit with an out of process loader/saver (think a "suid" helper or something to let you edit root files if you are authorized by polkit) It's complicated to predict how the GIO API would look like (if it is implemented in GIO). Ideally it should works transparently, GIO handles automatically all the polkit stuff when the process is owned by a user who doesn't have write permissions to the file. With polkit, file writing or reading are asynchronous, since we should wait the permission (dialog window with password to enter, typically, or the permissions are configured beforehand). So I think as soon as we use asynchronous GIO API, there won't be major problems. And anyway, for gsv, it's always possible to add a property, or something to handle this case. Worst case is to deprecate all the API and create a new one… But I think it won't be necessary. And if nobody works on that feature, we can still wait 10 years without having the feature, and if the current API is more complicated to use just because "maybe in the future we can support this and this", without certainty that the API flexibility we made fulfill those features. So for me it is a bit out of scope for the moment, unless you have a precise idea how it would be implemented in GIO. ----- 3 - even more pipedream, how would it fit with a git backend? think of an editor where every operation is mapped to a git commit etc What can be reused for that purpose is the GtkSourceBufferInputStream. If needed, we can make this class public. ----- Sébastien From mcepl@redhat.com Thu Dec 12 02:18:44 2013 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by restaurant.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3F8E76968 for ; Thu, 12 Dec 2013 02:18:44 +0000 (UTC) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -5.169 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-5.169 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_40=-0.001, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_HI=-5, RP_MATCHES_RCVD=-0.166, SPF_HELO_PASS=-0.001, SPF_PASS=-0.001] autolearn=ham Received: from restaurant.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (restaurant.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id WRWhfWG2PMhV for ; Thu, 12 Dec 2013 02:18:43 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mx1.redhat.com (mx1.redhat.com [209.132.183.28]) by restaurant.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 618F576967 for ; Thu, 12 Dec 2013 02:18:32 +0000 (UTC) Received: from int-mx12.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (int-mx12.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com [10.5.11.25]) by mx1.redhat.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id rBC2IVPN019999 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=OK) for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2013 21:18:31 -0500 Received: from wycliff.ceplovi.cz (ovpn-116-55.ams2.redhat.com [10.36.116.55]) by int-mx12.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id rBC2IUbR013012 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2013 21:18:31 -0500 Received: by wycliff.ceplovi.cz (Postfix, from userid 1000) id CAD3140BF8; Thu, 12 Dec 2013 03:18:29 +0100 (CET) Date: Thu, 12 Dec 2013 03:18:29 +0100 From: Matej Cepl To: gedit-list@gnome.org Message-ID: <20131212021829.GA8710@wycliff.ceplovi.cz> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="liOOAslEiF7prFVr" Content-Disposition: inline Organization: Red Hat Czech, s.r.o. Hi,

I have taken over the rope maintenance (it now resides on https://github.com/python-<= /u>rope/) and so I am also trying to port at least the proof of concept= which is gedit-rope (http://code.google.com/p/gedit-rope/) to Gnome 3 s= tate.

My current state is at the gnome3 branch, but I cannot understand why in th= e world https://github.com/mcepl/gedit-r= ope/blob/gnome3/ropeplugin/ropeplugin.py doesn=E2=80=99t create = ANY menu. Aside from this which should hopefully add a submenu to the TOols= menu, I tried also

ROPE_UI =3D '''<ui>

which should hopefully create a new highest-level menu, but neither of thes= e created anything in gedit-3.8. There is no Error message on the stderr.
Any ideas, what I do wrong, please?

You can probably configure your file manager to always open files with a certain extension or mime type with gedit. On UNIX systems, file extensions are not mandatory, so if you create a new file, there is no extension by default AFAIK. Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to a= sk (?)

gedit has a limited memory of previously edited items which can be recalled= on restart - a drop-down list next to the 'open'.

I would like to have rather more previously-opened items stored than the de= fault.
There seems to be no option to adjust this.

I can see further usefulness if items could be stored on a per-window= basis, but that might be unnecessarily complicated.

Kind regards,

With the GIO conventions, there is by nature more flexibility than the signals system in GeditDocument. With the async functions, it is possible to call the save or load function while a previous call is not finished. For example the user clicks two times on the save button (if the sensitivity is not updated). The desirable flexibility: parallel loading into several buffers, from one or several files; parallel saving into several files, from one or several buffers. The desirable restrictions: (1) at most one load at a time per buffer, (2) at most one save at a time per file. The GIO conventions allow the two restrictions. For the first one, it is possible to cancel the operation. If load_async() is called two times, the second cancels the first one. I think it is better to cancel the first one because the reason for calling load_async() a second time may be to fix a property (encoding, newline-type, etc). The second call has more chances to be the correct one. The first load operation can be in another GtkSourceFile (and thus another location). To be able to cancel it from another SourceFile, the buffer should keep a list of attached SourceFiles. When a SourceFile is created (with the buffer construct-only property), the SourceFile is registered in the buffer, and the buffer keeps a weak ref to the SourceFile. For the second restriction, it is not really possible to prevent it in gsv. It is not a big problem though, because GIO will normally not mix the contents. For g_file_replace(), we can read: This will try to replace the file in the safest way possible so that any errors during the writing will not affect an already existing copy of the file. For instance, for local files it may write to a temporary file and then atomically rename over the destination when the stream is closed. ===== I don't know if it's better in GtkSourceFile to have the location property construct-only or not. If it is construct-only, another SourceFile can be created with another GFile. A clone() function can be useful, to clone a SourceFile by being able to change the construct-only properties (the buffer and the location). Anyway, it is too early to say which solution is the better. ===== The nice thing with the save, saving, saved, … signals in GeditDocument is that GeditTab connects to these signals to show the progress bar, error messages with choices for the user, and maybe other features. When an error occurs, the user can ignore the error, and the operation is relaunched with one more flag. And by reading the code, I think if a plugin calls gedit_document_save_as() with some flags, and if an error occurs, GeditTab will show the error, and if the operation is relaunched, the flags can be screwed up (because the main save as button in gedit doesn't call directly gedit_document_save_as(), it calls a private GeditTab function that saves the flags). With the GIO conventions, there is no signals, and it's better like that. If a plugin wants to save the buffer to another file, there won't be unexpected behavior handled by gedit. The plugin will receive the errors and must handle them independently of gedit. On the other hand, the progress bar and the error messages are nice. It is useful for any text editor. In the future, we can integrate these features in gsv, with a GtkSouceTab containing high-level functions to load, save and save as (only with the default buffer location). In the short term we should decide what to do with the GeditDocument API wrt file loading and saving. With a rapid grep in gedit plugins, the API seems to be used by quite a lot of plugins, unfortunately. For example the spell plugin connects to the loaded and saved signal to load and save spell settings stored in the metadata. A solution is to keep the API, and write an adapter to use GtkSourceFiles. By doing this, we don't break plugins, and we test the gsv work. ===== My e-mail is long enough. Time for hacking! But gedit cancels the second: In gedit_document_save_real() (the default handler of the save signal), there is: g_return_if_fail (doc->priv->saver == NULL); Anyway cancelling the first one or the second one is something we can change easily. Is there some way to restore the older, sane, functionality? If there is no way to get the find box to stay open until *I* close it, then I'll be downgrading. Which is the latest version that does *NOT* behave that way? Who thinks these things up? Or is it just me that things boxes should stay open until closed by the user? See help -> contents in the menu, or press F1. If you still don't like, try the Commander plugin, it also contains a search command. Or use the search and replace dialog. There are also other search and replace third-party plugins. I do see a much more general problem that a mint user seeking help is= =20 often just dumped at the mint main page F1, then having to waste hours=20 researching (cynics have said, "free, only if you don't value your= =20 time").
I'm not sure where best to raise that as a QA issue=20 (and I'm very well aware of the sort of developer who is averse to=20 WTFM).

Your advice would be appreciated.

In my ge= dit (in a Mint 15 live), Help leads to a lazy generic "(?) <= /i>F1 contents" and "about", so help gets
ht= tp://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php
Wherein, a sear= ch for gedit is about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Do you reckon that useless link is in principle a gedit pro= blem (wrong direction), or a mint problem, or a live problem?
Co= nsidering Firefox help manages to point at firefox help, I su= spect the former, prompting an gedit enhancement request:
=C2=A0please point gedit help at gnome gedit help ... rather than leavin= g user blindly to guess

Moreover, looking up at the = gnome gedit top page
https://help.gnome.org/users/gedit/stable/index.html.en
=
I see no way of finding the the relevant open-recent page which you = have so kindly indicated
(helptext bug?)

Also Help -> "About" leads = to gedit.org, thence cir= cuitously to wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Gedit/Plugins
but that too seems silent about the open-recent (afaics)= .

Kind regards,
=C2=A0Bill

I'd be happy with it myself if I could just change the persistence time up to, say, two minutes. For me, things like this are matters of principal as much as they are matters of practicality. I moved to Linux precisely because I was tired of being told what I like, yet everywhere developers have this tendency to say: "Here's the latest and greatest, you are going to love it." Thus we see both gnome and KDE fragmenting and fragmenting again because so many people do not want the latest and greatest look and feel, but there seems to be no respect for that within the mainstream of development. Me, I'd have a checkbox: "Old look and feel" / "New look and feel". I'd be able to give the new idea a try now and then and, who knows, maybe I would come to love it. If not, I'd not have to consider downgrading to get back what *I* like. R --Boundary_(ID_+wh3oqzYPcKdksLkaEnXfA) Content-type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 Content-transfer-encoding: 8BIT

Let the user decide, make it configurable and that's that.

Yes, it's bad, and the Linux Mint developers should feel bad.
There's a bug about it here:=A0 https://bugs.launchpad.net= /linuxmint/+bug/1048803

In my ge= dit (in a Mint 15 live), Help leads to a lazy generic "(?) <= /i>F1 contents" and "about", so help gets
ht= tp://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php

=A0please point gedit help at gnome gedit help ... rather than leaving u= ser blindly to guess

Moreover, looking up at the gno= me gedit top page
https://help.gnome.org/users/gedit/stable/index.html.en

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to a= sk (?)

gedit has a limited memory of previously edited items which can be recalled= on restart - a drop-down list next to the 'open'.

I would like to have rather more previously-opened items stored than the de= fault.
There seems to be no option to adjust this.

I can see further usefulness if items could be stored on a per-window= basis, but that might be unnecessarily complicated.
