Playing the bad cop here: If we started doing this, what is the
threshold for future catastrophes, or what is the reason not to do this
constantly, having lots of poor people and conflicts on this earth?

I too had that thought at first.

Then I thought we could have a dedicated ad/support part of gnome.org and GNOME Foundation members could vote up or down on which ads should actually get displayed. Just kidding. But that is what crossed my mind.
