Sign up for an account at iptel.org and then you can try using their echo test (echo at iptel.org). It's handy to have an account with them, because sometimes my ekiga account won't register properly. There are other echo tests you can try. Google for "ekiga fun numbers" and you'll see some on that list. The only issue I have is that I cannot exit cleanly (is the word correct?) the application: ^Q closes the application but I can still see Ekiga's icon in my indicator applet. If I check processes I see it's still running so I have to kill it manually. Of course this is no stopper since I have ekiga open at all times but nevertheless I mention it. Hi, It is always good for us to know our software gives good results. Thank you for the feedback. At the moment we are testing a patch which should improve connectivity when Ekiga is behind a NAT (technicaly it fix STUN support to the RTP streams -i.e. the audio and video streams-) You can find it for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic here: https://launchpad.net/~sevmek/+archive/ppa (it is Ekiga 3.2.6+the patch) I will most probably build it for Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and the incoming Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 in 1 week or 2. Reports about this patch are positives for now. It is includuded in the dev branch of OPAL, and if the testing continue to give good results it will most likely be included in the next Ekiga release. The patch itself is small, apply only to OPAL and is binary compatible with Ekiga 3.2.6, which means you can patch OPAL yourself if you have Ekiga 3.2.6 already and it should work with just patching/rebuilding OPAL. The weird thing is that it had yesterday build for jaunty. I understand that I might have installed on the jaunty Box the unpatched builds and thus this might give problems. -- <-------------------------------------------------------> web perso : http://memeteau.com Boutique Ordinateurs GNU/Linux : http://shop.ekimia.fr Fixe : 0974763294 Mobile : 0624808051 Visio/jabber/GTalk : xmpp:freechelmi at jabber.fr From mike.brady at devnull.net.nz Sun Apr 11 22:29:49 2010 From: mike.brady at devnull.net.nz (Mike Brady) Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2010 10:29:49 +1200 Subject: [Ekiga-list] DNS lookup failures Message-ID: <1271024989.4871.15.camel@localhost> I am having problems getting Ekiga to register with a sipXecs server. I would like to use Ekiga as the client for SIP accounts with two providers: sipgate.com (US) and localphone.com. I'm running 32-bit ubuntu 9.10. My only internet connection is 3g mobile broadband. In case it's relevant, I'm living in mexico and using Telcel as my 3g provider. I've read the Ekiga wiki on nat traversal. I don't understand all of the information provided there, but it does not seem to provide a solution for me. I'm behind a nat firewall with a private IP address. Ekiga identifies this as a symmetric NAT. Obviously, I have no ability to configure port forwarding or otherwise alter the NAT, since it is administered by my ISP. The puzzling part for me is that using a different softphone on windoze 7 (X-Lite), I can make and receive calls through localphone. I would very much prefer to use Ekiga on Ubuntu. Since the above mentioned package of software+OS+VSP works behind my ISP's NAT firewall, I'm hoping it is possible to configure Ekiga+Ubuntu to also work with localphone on this connection. Suggestions? If it's not possible, that answer is also helpful to me - I won't spend more time pursuing this and will look into alternatives. Thanks, Dave PS I am not very knowledgeable about networking or linux, but am learning. I'm willing to read other sources and follow step-by-step instructions. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It doesn't have anything to do with your ISP. You can try using an account from iptel.org with the Ekiga software. Both v0alpha7 and v1.1 use libtheora0 as package name in debian, so I suppose their API is compatible. So to my knowledge, a recompilation of opal is not needed when upgrading theora. -- Eugen From Eugen.Dedu at pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr Tue Apr 13 09:31:23 2010 From: Eugen.Dedu at pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr (Eugen Dedu) Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:31:23 +0200 Subject: [Ekiga-list] ekiga problem on 3g connection (ubuntu 9.10) In-Reply-To: <4BC34A07.6050007@gmail.com> References: <4BC34A07.6050007@gmail.com> Message-ID: <4BC439EB.8070602@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> Dave Elliott wrote: > When I attempt to make a call with Ekiga, I get no audio and am > immediately connected. Dave is right in case of 3G connection you are always behing a Nat. it can be worst if you have only http/80 through a transparent connexion which is sometimes the case in France for "illimited web" . the bad thing is that you can have several nat and routeurs before the ISP router with public address so I guess STUN and ICE cannot make miracles in those case? -- <-------------------------------------------------------> web perso : http://memeteau.com Boutique Ordinateurs GNU/Linux : http://shop.ekimia.fr Fixe : 0974763294 Mobile : 0624808051 Visio/jabber/GTalk : xmpp:freechelmi at jabber.fr From michel.memeteau at gmail.com Tue Apr 13 09:35:26 2010 From: michel.memeteau at gmail.com (michel memeteau) Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:35:26 +0200 Subject: [Ekiga-list] ekiga problem on 3g connection (ubuntu 9.10) In-Reply-To: <4BC439EB.8070602@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> References: <4BC34A07.6050007@gmail.com> <4BC439EB.8070602@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> Message-ID: 2010/4/13 Eugen Dedu : >> The puzzling part for me is that using a different softphone on windoze >> 7 (X-Lite), I can make and receive calls through localphone. ?I would > > The only solution I see is that x-lite already uses an audio proxy. I'll summarize what I've learned and add a couple of questions. Using VOIP over a 3g broadband internet connection presents some obstacles because most, if not all, 3g ISPs run a NAT (network address translator) that assigns the end user a private IP address, rather than a public IP. The ISP's NAT acts as a firewall and may also block traffic on certain ports, causing further complications for VOIP. Much of the advice regarding port forwarding for VOIP on Ekiga's wiki page and many other web sources is focused on reconfiguring the NAT on a router in your home (or any router that you have access to configure). Therefore it is of no use to people in my situation; we are not able to reconfigure our ISP's NAT. Furthermore, some of us are behind a particularly strict kind of NAT, known as a symmetric NAT. This creates further difficulties. This Ekiga wiki page cited by Eugen does a good job of breaking down the effect of NATs on SIP in simple terms. I would like to identify potential solutions for my situation with the knowledgeable folks on this list. Based on your recommendations and my own research, I've found three: - STUN this is a server-side NAT traversal technology that, according to the wiki page I cited above, is automatically recognized by Ekiga. However, it will not work behind a symmetric NAT, so is of no use to me. - Proxy server: I've read that proxy servers are available for voice traffic, but not for video. Iptel.org has been recommended for this purpose and on its webpage touts very strong server-side nat traversal technology. Can I use a proxy server for audio, such as iptel.org, with my current VSP account? Or does this solution depend on creating and using an iptel.org account as my primary VOIP provider? - ICE: it is used by CounterPath products (eg eyebeam, x-lite), which have allowed me to make and receive VOIP calls from behind a symmetric NAT. So it may be the key to VOIP in my situation. Does that make sense, or is their another reason why Eyebeam works from behind a symmetric NAT and ekiga does not (using my current vsp, localphone.com)? I found an Ekiga dev ToDo list mentioning ICE implementation, but don't know whether Ekiga currently makes use of this technology. Anyone have an update? But I doubt that you could configure a VOIP-out account on empathy? -- <-------------------------------------------------------> web perso : http://memeteau.com Boutique Ordinateurs GNU/Linux : http://shop.ekimia.fr Fixe : 0974763294 Mobile : 0624808051 Visio/jabber/GTalk : xmpp:freechelmi at jabber.fr From murray at focus-computing.com.au Wed Apr 14 00:40:05 2010 From: murray at focus-computing.com.au (Murray Collingwood) Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2010 10:40:05 +1000 Subject: [Ekiga-list] Sound sometimes disabled Message-ID: Hi all I'm getting quite frustrated with this app. I try calling echo at iptel.org on three separate calls. The first two calls can work perfectly - the third call there will be a sound problem. Either: a) The volume icon on the call screen will be disabled as though all sound is disabled or b) The icon will be active but the playback volume control will be at 0 and disabled These three calls are all placed one after the other, nothing is changed between the calls. A fourth call will most likely work again. While 2 out of 3 maybe okay for Meatloaf it's not good enough for me. I have hunted through various list emails and it would seem there has always been trouble with Ekiga and sound on Linux. I tried disabling all of the sound controls and just configuring Ekiga but that didn't help either. I tried various options with Ekiga and the Linux sound preferences, still no change. I even ran Ekiga in a debug mode to look at the logs, and while there is a heap of messages generated I can't really tell what I'm looking at. You can view the log at http://focus-computing.com.au/ekiga.log Does anybody have a solution for this? PS Skype is running on this same machine (under Linux) and works fine every time. Ok, thanks for the info (sorry for the delay), I added it to the wiki (http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Understanding_NAT/firewall_issues_with_SIP_clients_%28eg_ekiga%29#Realistic_network.2C_with_NAT). Is there any reason for ekiga.net to refuse private IP addresses? Maybe because, if I understand correctly, even if received and rport allow to find out the correct public address/port, they still do not solve the symmetric nat problem for initiating communication, is that right? -- Eugen From dford at ansur.demon.co.uk Wed Apr 14 20:40:17 2010 From: dford at ansur.demon.co.uk (David Ford) Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2010 21:40:17 +0100 Subject: [Ekiga-list] Ekiga 3.2.6 - worked once only Message-ID: <4BC62831.10202@ansur.demon.co.uk> Hi I have tried several times to register with ekiga but always fail. I have committed many changes done by Thierry (thanks a lot!) in stable branch. I have not committed the whole file because I preferred to understand the changes. Moreover, there are several versions of this Makefile (Michael Rickman's, Thierry's and repository, each of them in one or several versions). My goal is to have a single Makefile for git/svn and release. I ask myself it it is useful to have this Makefile be the same (or almost the same) in stable branch and master. Is diff directory useful? If not, we should remove it with all the files inside. I am still working on it, but if you have some useful comments (such as what versions of build dependencies use) do not hesitate to write them! -- Eugen From kapetr at mizera.cz Fri Apr 16 16:01:27 2010 From: kapetr at mizera.cz (kapetr) Date: Fri, 16 Apr 2010 18:01:27 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [Ekiga-list] =?iso-8859-2?q?Ekiga_on_Ubuntu_using_DSL?= In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <9e9e04196683e4432da67f98b20eb43a@www3-mail.volny.cz> ---- Eugen Dedu wrote: > kapetr wrote: > >>> Just little modification would make this perfect > >>> >>> - see my post at this > >>>> bug report. > >> Does ekiga show ALWAYS symmetric nat with that router? > >> >> Because > >> sometimes I receive symmetric nat on my own router > >> >> too, I think this > >> appear in special conditions (I have just stopped > >> ekiga > >> >> or sommething > >> like this). > >> > >> -- > >> Eugen > >> > > > > Hello, > > > > Yes - Ekiga reports ALWAYS, it is symetric NAT. > > > > I have also run: > > > > root# stun stun.ekiga.net -v > > > > output is in attachment - unfortunately I don't understand > > the output: > > > -mapped IP same = 1 > > -hairpin = 0 > > -preserver port = 0 > > > > and I could find no documentation of it. > > > > But the point is - twinkle works behind also that > > NAT modem, and Ekiga > > > not - so I thing modification proposed (see my post > > at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ekiga/+bug/517580 > > > ) would be positive. > > > > With such modification I (and probably many others) > > would be finally > > > able to use Ekiga :-) > > Could you test with another two stun servers to see > if if they return > always symmetric nat? > > -- > Eugen In attachment are 2 stun test outputs (stun2.txt and stun3.txt)- if they mean the NAT is symmetric - I don't know. But see also stun4.txt - the port in mappedAddr differs for 2 different STUN servers- also it seems to be a symmetric NAT. BTW - Twinkle reports with pop-up warning also symmetric NAT. Interesting is, that with Twinkle the echo test (500) works - of course: the SIP server and called number (500) are on the same IP address. The call to someone else would probably fail. But Ekiga client do not get answer for his INVITE request ?! Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. Bob I found that Ekiga was already installed in this F-12, originally installed from the Omega F12 Live CD, and yes upon starting it it guides you through configuration and obtaining an outgoing telephone connection [for ten Dollars]. I did all this, an involved process but doable. It doesn't work, it acts as though it may be connecting to the "echo test" site but there is no audio to indicate that it is functioning, just a little "call completed" at the bottom. I would expect it should work since it was included with this version of Fedora. The other VOIP applications I have tried worked without much effort once installed. Strange! Obviously I have something wrong. Does anyone else have this working? Have any idea what I should do next? Message-ID: Hi folks Another 'dumb' question. I have three connections to SIP servers that my Ekiga 3.2.5 connects to. a) Ekiga.net b) iptel.org c) 2talk.co.nz When I start Ekiga it connects and registers with all three SIP servers fine. And generally there does not seem to be a problem. However, every couple of days I check the accounts and sometimes I find one of the connections is no longer registered. There has been some problem (maybe the SIP server being restarted or going offline or whatever, I don't know) and so Ekiga no longer indicates a registered connection. To fix it I can disable and enable the connection and it immediately registers itself again. And now the dumb questions: a) Can people still call me when this connection error message is on the screen? (maybe redirected through the other sip connections that are still registered?) b) Is this normal? Do connections drop out and leave people 'unregistered' so they can't receive calls??? This doesn't seem right to me. c) I was thinking that if Ekiga does have a dropped connection to a SIP server it should schedule an attempt to reconnect after 5 minutes. Is this already happening and I don't know about it? I executed ekiga-setup (several versions) from Michael's repository and all of them proposed Program Files. I have just created two ekiga-setup-s, one with nsis 2.43 (used by Michael), the other with a mix of 2.43 and 2.46 (latest version). nsis is the program which generates the installer part of ekiga, so there resides the "problem". Please execute both of them until installation dir choosing and tell me if the directory proposed is Program Files or My Documents. http://eugen.dedu.free.fr/awinek -- Eugen From dford at ansur.demon.co.uk Mon Apr 19 22:23:30 2010 From: dford at ansur.demon.co.uk (David Ford) Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2010 23:23:30 +0100 Subject: [Ekiga-list] Ekiga 3.2.6 - worked once only In-Reply-To: <4BC7062E.1080005@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> References: <4BC62831.10202@ansur.demon.co.uk> <4BC6C51B.9070809@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> <4BC6E4A7.20508@ansur.demon.co.uk> <4BC6F235.5000801@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> <4BC6FA35.5000203@ansur.demon.co.uk> <4BC7062E.1080005@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> Message-ID: <4BCCD7E2.9020008@ansur.demon.co.uk> Hi Eugen On 15/04/10 13:27, Eugen Dedu wrote: > David Ford wrote: > >> Hi Eugen >> >> On 15/04/10 12:02, Eugen Dedu wrote: >> >>> David Ford wrote: >>> >>> >>>> Hi Eugen >>>> >>>> On 15/04/10 08:49, Eugen Dedu wrote: >>>> >>>> >>>>> David Ford wrote: >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>>> . . . According to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ekiga/+bug/120251 it mentions to add yourself to the 'voice' group. You can do this by opening System?Administration?User&Groups and adding your username to the 'voice' group. Then, re-login (or restart). This piece of information should make it to the Ekiga wiki, http://wiki.ekiga.org/ In addition, the packager of ekiga should figure out a way to avoid this problem. Simos -- A. The initial SIP account registered fine and I could call their support number (SIP) without any issue. When I tried to configure a 'Call out' within Ekiga using the same account details the thing broke down completely. When I rang them for support I found I didn't need the special 'Call out' within Ekiga - just the standard account registered enabled me to make calls to regular phones. I'm suggesting of course that you may not need any special 'Call out' functionality in Ekiga. Check with the support people at VoipDiscount. Now I have that problem to solve. I had the same problem with Skype when I tried it. Perhaps a port that needs opening in the router? Echolink required a port opened there and I tried opening 5060 which the voip phones seem to use but still have this audio problem. Hi, I did a test using a fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10 (with virtualbox) and my own packages ( https://launchpad.net/~sevmek/+archive/ppa ). The results are: I can register to ekiga.NET and place a call to 500 at ekiga.net with audio and video. The user is *not* part of any groups like audio/video/voice. Thus, AFAIK this issue is not relevent using a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation. Still, in my own setup (ubuntu 9.10, but upgraded from version to version since a long time now) my user is part of the groups audio and video. I do not remember if I did this and why... Thus, maybe this issue is maybe the result of an old behavior in Ubuntu (and maybe Debian). Could you please tell us what are the distros you are using and when you installed it (using which version)? As a matter of interest Fedoras bug tracking system is full of complaints that Ekiga doesn't work - all marked No Fix. I don't know who packages Ekiga for Fedora but perhaps you should get in touch with him. Lots of the bug reports say Ekiga hasn't worked since 2.x in about FC 6 or 8. Currently I have an ALSA error that I have tried to fix but I have managed to get no audio output in Ekiga and a feedback screech if I unplug the head set. I hope that undoing all I did will get it back to half working again. (To 'break' it I opened alsamixer and set up the sound card - I turned the +20db on for the mic - I think that pulse doesn't like it when you do that.) I have pulseaudio installed and running. Fedora Core 11 Ekiga 3.2.6 I have wireshark installed. I can send d4 or wireshark reports - I'm not good at compiling or patching. I can install .rpm files locally or from a repository. It is a shame that none of Ekiga developers use a RedHat Linux because it is quite different from Debian versions. I don't think this is a specific Ekiga problem - more of a packaging issue with Fedora. Hope I can help to fix the problem David On 22/04/10 10:24, yannick wrote: > Le mercredi 21 avril 2010 ? 19:35 -0400, Bob Goodwin a ?crit : > >> On 21/04/10 17:58, David Ford wrote: >> >>> Hi Bob - I just added myself to the audio and video groups - and Now I >>> can Register!!!!!! >>> >>> The echo test still doesn't work though. >>> >>> I think the voice group must be an Ubuntu thing I'm not sure which of >>> the two made the difference as I don't want to mess with it now it's >>> half working! >>> David >>> >> Ok, I added myself to the audio group and that made a difference. Mine is about 80% working this morning. Fedora 12 updated to the most recent available. Ekiga 3.2.6 also Everything still in place, Pulseaudio, selinux, etc. and I keep the audio level controls set high with the +20 db switch on. Talking too close and loud will cause distortion ... One remaining problem is that my outgoing audio gets "chopped" as heard on echo test and my cell phone. Counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 it will drop 2 and 4? I don't know where that is happening but it does not happen on Echolink using Qtel, when Qtel works, but that's another temperamental voip program with differential problems. Am I alone with that chopping? Getting voipdiscount to register at start up seems to be a problem but that can wait, for the present I can mess with it 'til it registers. Now that I understand the setup process a little better [hardly an expert] I think I will try Twinkle again too. PTLIB basically offer the hardware management part, while OPAL basically offers protocols (like H323, SIP) and codecs (like speex, H261,...). The website for PTLIB and OPAL is here: http://www.opalvoip.org/ Ekiga is build on them. You already have OPAL installed. The version I propose is the same as the one you have already + a small patch for better NAT traversal support of the audio and video streams. You just have to install as I told in the first message, it should just replace the existing OPAL. Then use Ekiga as usual. (There is no need to change the Ekiga package, the patch is small and it is binary compatible) Best regards, Yannick From bobgoodwin at wildblue.net Sat Apr 24 21:18:03 2010 From: bobgoodwin at wildblue.net (Bob Goodwin) Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2010 17:18:03 -0400 Subject: [Ekiga-list] Fedora 12 testing packages for NAT traversal support In-Reply-To: <1272141663.3466.118.camel@achille> References: <1272104481.3466.110.camel@achille> <4BD34D3D.4000803@ansur.demon.co.uk> <4BD34F9C.5090500@wildblue.net> <1272141663.3466.118.camel@achille> Message-ID: <4BD3600B.3050309@wildblue.net> On 24/04/10 16:41, yannick wrote: > Le samedi 24 avril 2010 ? 16:07 -0400, Bob Goodwin a ?crit : > >> On 24/04/10 15:57, David Ford wrote: >> >>> Thanks Yannick and Chipper >>> I will do a fresh install of FC 12 and give it a try >>> Thanks again >>> David >>> >>> On 24/04/10 11:21, yannick wrote: >>> >>>> Hi, >>>> >>>> Chipper did binary packages for Fedora 12 including the NAT traversal >>>> patch (add STUN support for the audio and video streams). >>>> >>>> Please test them and report here: >>>> http://ekiga.net/yannick/f12/ >>>> >>>> (You just need to install opal-3.6.6-1.1.fc12.i686.rpm if your using the >>>> 32 bits version of Fedora, or opal-3.6.6-1.1.fc12.x86_64.rpm if you're >>>> using the 64 bits version) >>>> >>>> Many thanks to Chipper. >>>> >>>> Best regards, >>>> Yannick >>>> >>>> _______________________________________________ >>>> >>> >> What is "opal?" Which OPAL/PTlib version is suggested? For example it seems to me that OPAL 3.8.0 won't work. For now, I've stuck with the "stable" branches described in the wiki, which suggest for the stable branch PTlib 2.6.x (gets 2.6.7) and OPAL 3.6.x (gets 3.6.8). For now, it compiles, it installs and exits cleanly, cf. http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Building_Ekiga_for_Windows. I need to make tests for communications. The only major issue which made that it is no longer downloadable is non reproducible on my machine, so I cannot fix it. -- Eugen From julian at juliankranz.de Fri Apr 30 09:50:42 2010 From: julian at juliankranz.de (Julian Kranz) Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2010 11:50:42 +0200 Subject: [Ekiga-list] Bug in Ekiga In-Reply-To: <4BD4A15B.4090302@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> References: <1272147349.11194.10.camel@comp002-adk> <1272156177.14552.2.camel@comp002-adk> <4BD4A15B.4090302@pu-pm.univ-fcomte.fr> Message-ID: <1272621042.1699.1.camel@comp002-adk> > Please send us the -d 4 output. Also, what account do you use > (ekiga.net or what)? I'm sending the output as attachment (second try: as link: http://juliankranz.de/ekiga.log). While recording it, I got a call from my local provider (sipgate.de) and another one from within a virtual machine, calling "jucs at iptel.org". I got a "user busy" as expected. When the first call finished, I tried to call again, but it's always busy from that point on. No matter if I use the sipgate.de account (that is, my landline phone) or the virtual machine using jucs at itel.org . Ekiga is also connected to ekiga.net, but I'm not using it right now. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... IMHO it is either a rare case, either something completly unrelated to Ekiga. BTW, will you patch with STUN support for RTP? I've reported this before (on the mailing list iirc) and have been asked to provide log output, but being short on time and running Twinkle because of this, I haven't gotten around to do that (yet). Anyway, it may be possible to revive your wlan interface by unloading the driver (ifdown --force wlan0, ifconfig wlan0 down, rmmod the-name-of-the-module (see lsmod), modprobe dito). The feedback is most probably because *playback* from the mic is enabled. In alsamixer (the commandline tool), in "View: Playback" (the first after starting alsamixer), hit cursor right till you're at Mic, then hit "m" to disable playback ("MM" should appear below the slider, not "OO"). Then hit tab once to get to "View: Capture", go right to "capture" or similar, hit space to make "CAPTURE" appear below the slider instead of "-----", and cursor up until record volume is right.
