thks. that's a smart thing to do. from lsusb, i get:
Bus 005 Device 004: ID 04f2:a217 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd

Unfortunately, google search throws up nothing. This is not one of those big
name product. It is a Taiwanese company's.
