Perhaps twinkle doesn't use the same settings.
Notice that Ekiga supports two types of codecs :
- Wideband : 16kHz
- Narrowband : 8 kHz

We have determined that there was a problem with ALSA and Narrowband as
arecord -D plughw:0,0 -c 1 -r 8000 -f S16_LE - | aplay -D plughw:0,0 -c
1 -r 8000 -f S16_LE -
doesn't work.

What about the following command :
arecord -D plughw:0,0 -c 1 -r 16000 -f S16_LE - | aplay -D plughw:0,0 -c
1 -r 16000 -f S16_LE -

?
