I've been doing something similar for GTK+[2]. Rob Bradford and I were supposed to bootstrap it in GUADEC but didn't have the time to chat about it. Right now I can comment you based on my experience with the GTK+ patches that the hard work is only getting developers to review the patches. I can advice you the following concretely: - Do a list of patches, mostly simple fixes - Group those patches like: small, ready to commit, decision needed, etc. - Try with small patches first so the patch queue flush is more evident. Now, it's a good time to do a call for arms :). Is anyone else interested in starting the patchsquad for real? I mean, start to maybe do IRC meetings and cleaning modules, etc. A good first task would be to pick modules from the module list in the wiki (mostly Vincent modules) and try -say- 5 patches and get together in IRC to try to come up with a common workflow and format to present our work. :) 0 - http://live.gnome.org/PatchSquad 1 - http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/patchsquad-list 2 - http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2008-July/msg00239.html From lmedinas@gmail.com Wed Jul 30 04:12:49 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gnome-bugsquad@gnome.org Delivered-To: gnome-bugsquad@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3464750352 for ; Wed, 30 Jul 2008 04:12:49 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -2.522 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.522 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, TW_HS=0.077] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 2) (firewall!) Right now I can comment you based on my experience with the GTK+
patches that the hard work is only getting developers to review the
patches. I can advice you the following concretely:
 - Do a list of patches, mostly simple fixes
 - Group those patches like: small, ready to commit, decision needed, etc.
 - Try with small patches first so the patch queue flush is more evident.

<SNIP>

A good first task would be to pick modules from the module list in the
wiki (mostly Vincent modules) and try -say- 5 patches and get together
in IRC to try to come up with a common workflow and format to present
our work.

Patchsquad or not, how is my review work to be presented to the developers? You mention IRC which a) I rarely use and b) doesn't really suit the task, IMO (I'd likely be around when the main developers aren't, at least for Banshee). I was really wondering about Bugzilla-specific methods. Are there any? Should I send around a "patch summary" via email to the project's mailing list?

I believe sending a mail to the mailing list (or directly to the maintainers if there's no mailing list for the project) is the best option. At least, it seems to work really fine for Diego and GTK+ :) Cheers, -- Cosimo From andrew.conkling@gmail.com Wed Jul 30 13:32:55 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gnome-bugsquad@gnome.org Delivered-To: gnome-bugsquad@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BE0B750491 for ; Wed, 30 Jul 2008 13:32:55 +0000 (GMT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.229 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.229 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001, MISSING_HEADERS=1.292, TW_HS=0.077] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 2) (firewall!) Right now I can comment you based on my experience with the GTK+
patches that the hard work is only getting developers to review the
patches. I can advice you the following concretely:
 - Do a list of patches, mostly simple fixes
 - Group those patches like: small, ready to commit, decision needed, etc.
 - Try with small patches first so the patch queue flush is more evident.

<SNIP>

A more pointed question: What's the "reviewed" patch status, as opposed to accepted/needs-work? That would seem to be a good "holding pattern" for a patch until a developer gets around to taking a look. Any reason that couldn't work?

We don't have a patch status flag for this, but as GNOME Bugzilla patch status flags is already heavily patched it may be an option to have something like "tested-and-works". However I don't see a huge difference to other existing statuses, and we already have a lot of them (commit-now, commit-after-freeze, or "reviewed" which means nothing to me at all). Plain bugzilla only has "none", "reviewed-" and "reviewed+" IIRC. OK, I'm getting off-topic here. Summary: Before adding a new patch status let's clean up the existing ones, e.g. "reviewed". Currently I would prefer a summary mail. If it doesn't mean much to you, I'm assuming that'd apply in general for b.g.o. Could I use that for my described use? One reason could be that if you set the patch to "reviewed", you won't be able to find it from the bugzilla main page for the product. I think the "reviewed" keyword should be used either when you reviewed it and it looks fine but you aren't in the power to set it as "accepted" or, if you're the maintainer, the patch looks fine but you want to fix the bug using another approach.
