We really need to start collecting "how-to" article like this one since as you said at the beginning of your post gedit is "much more powerful than you may know". The problem is that we need a way to market this idea in a more efficient way and you post is a great example on how this can be done. What do you think about proposing this post as an article for one of the next issues of the GNOME journal? You will also be happy to know that some of the gripes you listen at the end of your post have been solved in gedit 2.20. For example you can now highlight "PHP inside HTML". Thanks, Paolo On Mon, 2007-10-01 at 09:47 -0700, Micah Carrick wrote: > I put together some notes on how I setup gedit for use as a web > development editor. I also use gedit for HTML editing, but prefer not to run HTML Tidy through external tools, but rather through a dedicated plugin (http://www.eng.tau.ac.il/~atavory/gedit-plugins/html-tidy/). This allows running tidy to check stuff, and being able to click on the bottom pane to go directly to the error/warning. Also, if HTML Tidy is used to modify an existing file, and something is very botched, then it can simply erase the original contents entirely. As far as I understand, running it through external tools consequently necessitates output to a new document, which I personally find less convenient. Finally, as HTML Tidy modifies the document, the plugin tries to guess the change to the cursor position, and move the cursor to the correct place. I modify and save it. When I check the permissions, the file have permissions 700. Can I configure gedit and not modify the permissions? I'm using gedit in xfce (perhaps is a reason). When the source code control process launches the editor, it waits for the editor process to end to know when to read the edited comment (this is all pretty common). Unfortunately there seems to be no way to force gedit start a new process when one is already running. Other editors have flags like --solo for this purpose. I have a problem very important for me because I cannot actually develop with gedit. I'm using gedit 2.19.92 and when I modify a file, gedit change the file permissions. I have a file with mask 777. It's probably simpler and less confusing to keep the syntax highlighting extensions separate, even if the mentioned languages have similar syntax. If there was some inheritance mechanism, all the common declarations could be put in a common abstract base class but I don't think there is. During my test, i used gedit to edit this file, and check if the modification was detected or not. It didn't really worked as i expected : On a file in my home, i got those events after a first modification : Monitoring : '/home/flo/test' (number = 1) Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_OPEN(file) * Opening file Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_CLOSE(file) Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_OPEN(file) * 1st modification Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_CLOSE(file) And then nothing. Editing again the file with gedit, vi, nano, and even touch don't generate events. On a file in /etc, i got those events : Monitoring : '/etc/fstab' (number = 1) Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_OPEN(file) * Opening file Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_CLOSE(file) Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_OPEN(file) * 1st modification Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_MOVE_SELF(file) Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_CLOSE(file) * 2nd modification Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_DELETE_SELF(file) Monitored file n°1 Event : IN_IGNORED(file) And then again it stop working. For the second case i workaround the problem by repolling the file if i get an IN_DELETE_SELF event and the file still exists, but for the first case, i don't know what to do. I also tried nano, kate, mousepad, and they all worked well with inotify, the only other exception is vim that act like gedit in the second case. I don't know if the problem is known, and if there is something to do against it. I wanted something reliable to check a file for modification, but if it fail with one of the most used editor, and i don't really know if it is really useful. If there is nothing to do, is there any good workaround ? I attach the little app i used to test inotify if someone want to reproduce the bug (if it is one). 1 : http://ibm5.ma.utexas.edu/cgi-bin/man-cgi?inotify+7 Best Regards, Mertens Florent ___________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! You can edit a private copy. cp /usr/share/gtksourceview-2.0/styles/oblivion.xml ~/.gnome2/gtksourceview= -1.0/styles Quit all gedit instances, then restart gedit to activate the style. I recommend starting it from the command line when changing the style and language rules--gtksourceview will report errors to STDOUT. PS. Anyway even more simply you can use the "Add" style button in the preference dialog... in that case the style file will be places in ~/.gnome2/gedit/styles directory which is also looked for style files[1] Do not forget to add your best themes to http://live.gnome.org/GtkSourceView/StyleSchemes ! ciao Paolo [1] when using the gui files are not programmatically placed in ~/.local/share/gtksourceview-2.0/styles since editing gedit preferences should not affect the other programs using gtksourceview) From alessandro.molina@gmail.com Sat Oct 13 22:35:21 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7AEA3B011F for ; Sat, 13 Oct 2007 22:35:21 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Score: 0.884 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=0.884 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_40=-0.185, SPF_NEUTRAL=1.069] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6, seldom 2.4 (older, 4) (up: 8740 hrs), (distance 18, link: ethernet/modem), [85.18.95.72] Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id hYIkngd9+1Vp for ; Sat, 13 Oct 2007 22:35:19 -0400 (EDT) Received: from aa012msr.fastwebnet.it (aa012msr.fastwebnet.it [85.18.95.72]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3329D3B010C for ; Sat, 13 Oct 2007 22:35:19 -0400 (EDT) Received: from [192.168.0.3] (28.232.0.226) by aa012msr.fastwebnet.it (7.3.118.6) id 470A5B05006BDD1E for gedit-list@gnome.org; Sun, 14 Oct 2007 04:35:16 +0200 From: Alessandro Molina To: gedit-list@gnome.org Content-Type: text/plain Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2007 04:35:23 +0200 Message-Id: <1192329323.20538.3.camel@cosmo> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.12.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailman-Approved-At: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 04:34:27 -0400 Subject: [gedit-list] Python Refactoring Plugin X-BeenThere: gedit-list@gnome.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.8 Precedence: list List-Id: discussion about usage and developement of gedit List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2007 02:35:21 -0000 I have developed a plugin for Gedit which implements common refactoring functions for Python Language using BicycleRepairMan library. The proper location is ~/.local/share/gtksourceview- 2.0/styles (as per
freedesktop spec). We still supported the old gtksourceview-1.0 dir for
lang files (since they still work). I guess that supporting that dir
also for styles is a side effect...

Anyway even more simply you can use the "Add" style button in the
preference dialog... in that case the style file will be places in
~/.gnome2/gedit/styles directory which is also looked for style files[1]

Do not forget to add your best themes to
http://live.gnome.org/GtkSourceView/StyleSchemes !

ciao

[1] when using the gui files are not programmatically placed in
~/.local/share/gtksourceview-2.0/styles since editing gedit preferences
should not affect the other programs using gtksourceview)

You might find it interesting: http://www.stambouliote.de/projects/gedit_plugins_old.html I still am interested in integrating some bicycle repair functions into the class browser plugin, like renaming, finding function definitions, etc. Would you be interested in defining some common interfaces so that PyCycle functions can be called from the context menu of the class browser? I recently use gedit + plugins to code in rails, and i have a pair of suggestions to improve gedit. (i would like to make gedit more close to textmate). -Remember the last opened tabs: for me, the most important feature that i need, it's really boring open every time the same tabs... i try with the extension "saved sessions", but it's not the solution because i have to choose manuality the session -Code folding: i thinks that is very useful to work with a very large files (maybe the best option to add this feature is make an extension) -Check if there's an update of some plugin (like firefox), too install or delete plugins in the plugins window -Short the plugins in the preferences windows, like pidgin: http://www.softpedia.com/screenshots/Portable-Pidgin_7.png You can sort the plugins by "enabled" or by the "name" -E is a textmate windows clon http://www.e-texteditor.com/index.html, there is an screencast that we can learn some cool features. Some thinks that i like (i find too in textmate) -In the "status bar" it can change the number the tab spaces really fast (not find in the menus) -In the "status bar" it can change the ver fast the extension of th file file (look this screenshot: http://garbageburrito.com/album/huge/4049 Maybe you thing that all of this feateure is just a clone of textamate, but in the rails linux world, gedit is the only serious contender to textmate. Thanks to read me, and i hope that you understand that this mail is only to improve gedit, not todo a troll. Usually I like to have a few terminals open that keep active tails on log files. I've tried editing the plugin directly to add this functionality but unfortunately I don't know that much about Python so I thought I'd drop this suggestion. - Brian Cardarella From trond.danielsen@gmail.com Mon Oct 29 16:04:33 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35A323B04E2 for ; Mon, 29 Oct 2007 16:04:33 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Score: -2.6 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.6 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, SPF_PASS=-0.001] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 2) (firewall!) If not so, would it be hard for me to add this? Where can i find documentation on how I can do this? The highlighting is provided by gtksourceview so you would need to create a systemverilog.lang file. If you are using gedit 2.20 (which in turns uses gtksourceview 2), then you can read some docs here: http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtksourceview-2.0/stable Paolo > thanks a lot, > > Pieter > From pieter.cogghe@gmail.com Wed Oct 31 15:55:00 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: gedit-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C9EB93B0628 for ; Wed, 31 Oct 2007 15:55:00 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Score: -2.523 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.523 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, SPF_PASS=-0.001, TW_GT=0.077] X-Amavis-OS-Fingerprint: Linux 2.6 (newer, 2) (firewall!) I think I found out how I'm supposed to do it. I'll extend on the verilog syntax and will use Gvim SystemVerilog support as a reference. I'm also going to write some snippets. Gedit starts to feel a bit like Textmate ;-) I also 'd like syntax highlighting for AVM and SystemC, both are libraries, built on SystemVerilog and C++. Am I supposed to do this the same way, that is: add a mimetype for systemC and AVM, I suppose not, because these aren't really languages? Is there another way I can provide syntax highlighting? thanks a lot, Pieter 2007/10/31, Paolo Borelli : > > Il giorno mer, 31/10/2007 alle 11.15 +0100, Pieter ha scritto: > > Hi all, > > > > I was just wondering if there has been any effort to add SystemVerilog > > syntax highlighting to Gedit?
