From salimma at fedoraproject.org Fri Jul 13 07:50:04 2012 From: salimma at fedoraproject.org (Michel Alexandre Salim) Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2012 14:50:04 +0700 Subject: [Geary] sqlheavy vs sqlite Message-ID: <4FFFD32C.6040509@fedoraproject.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, I'm working on a spec file for Geary (for Fedora, but it might be reusable from other RPM-based distributions). For the current trunk series, it will have to go into the development branch that will become Fedora 18, due to the dependency on Vala 0.17.2; however, the 0.1.0 release should be buildable on Fedora 17 (needing Vala 0.16.0). One question: geary 0.1.0 depends on sqlheavy, a wrapper around sqlite, whereas trunk reverts to using sqlite directly. Is sqlheavy planned to be re-used at any time in the future? We don't have it packaged yet for Fedora, so if sqlheavy will not be used for 0.2.0 and beyond, I figured I might as well not plan on supporting Fedora 17 and focus on shipping a 0.2.0 pre-release for Fedora 18. Also, would Yorba be interested in merging the spec file as a reference for other RPM distributions? It's conceivable that we might use sqlheavy again at some future point, but only if it makes large changes to its threading model, and switching back to sqlheavy would be a major project for us (just as switching away from it was). ?I think that 0.2 will certainly not depend on sqlheavy. I think we probably won't merge the spec file into our tree since then we'd feel like we needed to maintain it, which is really outside the scope of our activities. ?Cheers - adam On Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 3:50 AM, Michel Alexandre Salim wrote: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, I'm working on a spec file for Geary (for Fedora, but it might be reusable from other RPM-based distributions). I've finished my spec file, actually -- I'm deciding to target the current trunk series instead, since 0.2.0 will be out in time for Fedora 18. There's probably no point packaging sqlheavy after the Yorba team has discovered shortcomings in its design! My spec is attached; I plan for it to be able to be reused both for stable tarballs and git snapshots, once 0.2.0 comes out -- deliberately not adding support for 0.1.0, but it's a simple matter of adjusting the list of build dependencies. Note that the snapshot hash is incorrect at the moment - the two patches I submitted got applied in a different order than the order I sent them in. I'll experiment with Geary for a little bit and then file a review request in Fedora. Please let me know if there's anything you want changed in the spec.
